FAQ

What are some advantages of the Prospector design?

The Prospector is a classic canoe design and the most popular model we build. Often called “the workhorse of the Canadian North,” it was originally used to transport goods along Canada’s vast river systems.

Today, the Prospector is a favorite among recreational paddlers and backcountry trippers. Its wide beam and deep hull provide high carrying capacity, making it ideal for multi-day trips and extended expeditions. The generous width also adds stability, resulting in a comfortable and confidence-inspiring ride.

A moderate rocker allows the Prospector to perform well in moving water while still tracking reliably on open lakes. The symmetrical hull design makes it equally well-suited for solo or tandem paddling.

This balance of capacity, stability, and maneuverability is what makes the Prospector such a versatile and enduring canoe design.

What are some disadvantages of the Prospector design?

The Prospector is a canoe designed to perform best when it’s carrying a load. Its deeper hull provides excellent capacity and stability when fully packed.

When paddled empty, however, that same depth causes the canoe to sit higher in the water. This makes it more vulnerable to wind. If you’re heading out without gear, adding ballast can help keep the canoe settled and improve handling.

If you expect to paddle with little or no gear most of the time, you may want to explore our Recreational Series, which is better suited for lighter, casual use.

How long is a Prospector canoe?

Prospectors by Nova Craft Canoe are available in many lengths to suit your needs: 15', 16', 17', and 18'. The most recent addition to this category is the Prospector 14 Solo model, introduced in 2024.

How much does a Prospector canoe weigh?

The material you choose plays a big role in your canoe’s weight, durability, and price, so it’s worth considering your options carefully.

Our Prospector canoes in 15', 16', and 17' are available in every material we offer — from our rugged SP3 plastic to our premium Carbon-Aramid blend, “Blue Steel.”

The 14' Solo and 18' Prospector models are available in our full range of composite materials.

Why do so many canoe companies make Prospectors?

Today, many Canadian manufacturers build their own version of the Prospector canoe, but the design has deep roots.

The original Prospector was pioneered by the legendary Chestnut Canoe Company of New Brunswick. Chestnut’s design drew inspiration from the canoes used by voyageurs and First Nations peoples throughout the region, creating a boat built for long journeys, heavy loads, and rugged waterways.

Over time, the Prospector has become an icon of Canadian canoeing history, and its timeless design remains perfectly suited to modern canoe trippers.

While many companies now offer their own interpretations — with varying degrees of faithfulness to the original — Nova Craft takes pride in building a Prospector that closely follows the specifications of the classic Chestnut design.
